4 The Nervous System
Warm Up • Critical Thinking
Can you tell why the child in the picture has worn something
like spectacles?
Our body is made up of a large number of tiny cells that carry out all the body
functions. Thus, cell is the smallest unit of an organism’s body. Cells of similar
nature form groups called tissues. Different tissues together form body parts
called organs. Many organs working together form an organ system. All the
organ systems work together to make a complete organism.
Our body is formed of many organ systems. These organ systems work together
as a team in co-ordination with each other.
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
You are reading this book with the help of your eyes, listening with your ears
and understanding with your brain. All this is possible because of the nervous
system. Nervous system makes us aware of our surroundings. It coordinates and
controls the working of all the systems of the body.
There are three main parts of the nervous system: Brain, spinal cord and nerves.
