Division of Decimals
Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number
The division of a decimal is not different from the division of a whole
number. To divide a decimal by a whole number, decimal point is inserted
in the quotient when the decimal digits are taken for division. In other
words, place the decimal in quotient just over the decimal in the dividend.
Example 13: Divide 63.432 by 12. Example 14: Divide 46.27 by 5.
Solution: 5 . 2 8 6 Solution: 9 . 2 5 4
12 6 3. 4 3 2 5 4 6. 2 7 0
– 6 0 – 4 5
3 4 1 2
– 2 4 – 1 0
1 0 3 2 7
– 9 6 – 2 5
7 2 2 0
– 7 2 – 2 0
2 cannot be left as
0 the remainder. 0
Here, the decimal is placed in There is no concept of remainder in
the quotient before the digit 4 is the division of the decimal. So, add
brought down for division. zero(s) in the dividend and continue
division till the remainder becomes
Thus, 63.432 ÷ 12 = 5.286
zero. Here, 46.27 and 46.270 are
equivalent.
Thus, 46.27 ÷ 5 = 9.254
