MATHS LAB ACTIVITY • Experiential Learning
Aim: To understand the multiplication of decimals
Materials: Tracing paper, chart paper, a pencil, sketch pens and a ruler
Method: Let us find the product of 0.3 × 0.7.
1. Take a chart paper and draw a square using a
ruler and a pencil.
2. Divide the square into 10 equal parts vertically.
Each division reflects or 0.1 of the square.
3. Shade three divisions to represent 0.3 as shown
in the adjoining figure.
4. Then, take a tracing paper and trace a square
0.3
same as the square on the chart paper.
5. Divide this square into 10 equal parts horizontally
and shade 7 divisions. These divisions show 0.7
0.7
of the square.
6. Now, cover the square drawn on the chart paper
with the square on tracing paper exactly.
7. Observe the number of total sub-squares you see
and count how many sub-squares have double
shade.
Observation: We observe that
0.21
Total number of sub-squares = 100
Number of sub-squares with double shade = 21
This means, or 0.21 of the square has double shade.
Conclusion: We conclude that 0.3 × 0.7 = 0.21
