Comparing and Arranging the Numbers
In earlier classes, we learnt to compare the small numbers. We follow the
same rules for comparing the large numbers.
Case I. The numbers having different numbers of digits
The number having more digits is greater than the number having
less digits.
Examples: 246730 > 99987
(6 digits) (5 digits)
57695008 < 100000000
(8 digits) (9 digits)
Case II. The numbers having the same number of digits
If the number of digits in both the numbers is the same, start
comparing the digits from the highest (leftmost) place and continue
till two different digits are found. Compare these digits to decide
which number is greater or smaller.
Examples: 4567328 < 4592576 [ 6 < 9]
2975641 > 2975609 [ 4 > 0]
Example 18: Choose the greatest number in the following. 456872943,
456827943, 456827493. Also, arrange the numbers in
ascending order.
Solution: Here, all the numbers have equal number of digits.
Therefore, to find out the greatest number in them, we
put the digits in the place-value chart.
