Kashmiri, Sindhi and Urdu are written from right to left.
Dances
India has a long tradition of dances. There
are two main types of dances—folk dance
and classical dance. The popular folk dances
are Bhangra (Punjab), Ghoomar (Rajasthan),
Bihu (Assam), Garba (Gujarat), and the tribal
dances in the eastern and north-eastern states
of India.
Classical dances are Bharatanatyam (Tamil Manipuri Dance
Nadu), Kathak (Uttar Pradesh), Kathakali
(Kerala), Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh),
Manipuri (Manipur), Mohiniattam (Kerala)
and Odissi (Odisha).
Another form of the classical dance in India is
the Dance-Drama such as Kathakali (Kerala)
and Yakshagana (Karnataka). In a dance- Odissi Dance
drama, stories are told through dances.
Music
There are two types of classical music in India—Hindustani music and
Carnatic music. The Hindustani music is practised in North India, while
Carnatic music is practised in South India. A large variety of musical
instruments are used in both the styles of music.
Indian music is based on the combination of Raga and Tala. Ragas are
sung during a particular season of the year. Tala binds the music and is
called the pulse of Indian music. Music is considered the soul of dance.
