Gases dissolve in liquids

                                                                                               • Experiential Learning

Take a glass tumbler and a soda bottle. Open the
soda bottle and pour it in the tumbler. Now, add
one teaspoonful of salt in soda.
          What do you observe?

The bubbles start coming out of the soda. These bubbles are of a gas called carbon

dioxide. Here, soda is a liquid in which carbon dioxide gas is dissolved. Hence,
it is an example of gas in liquid solution.
                                    2 • Critical Thinking

Give two examples each of the mixture of
           1. A solid in a liquid

           2. A liquid in a liquid

           3. A gas in a liquid

           AT ONE GO

m Anything that occupies space and has weight is called matter.
m Matter is made up of atoms.
m Atoms combine to form molecules.

m Matter exists in three states – solid, liquid and gas.
m Matter can be changed from one form to another by heating or cooling.
m Some solids can be dissolved in liquids.
m Some liquids can be dissolved in other liquids.

m Some gases can be dissolved in liquids.

           REMEMBER THESE TERMS

Atom : The smallest part of matter
Soluble : Something that mixes well
Solute : Solid that is soluble in a liquid
Solvent : Liquid in which a solute can be dissolved

Solution : A mixture of solute and solvent
           Dissolve : To mix
