Note: Sometimes, the shopkeeper spends money on the articles for
transportation, maintenance, overheads, etc. These expenses are the
parts of the cost price and are added to the cost price of the article.
Example 3: Mr Vinay bought an old car for `65000. He spent
`10500 more on its repairs and sold it for `90000. Find
his profit or loss.
Solution: Here, cost price of the car = `65000
Overhead expense = `10500
So, actual cost price = `65000 + `10500 = `75500
Selling price of the car = `90000
Here, S.P. > C.P., there is a profit.
Hence, Profit = Selling price – Actual cost price
= `90000 – `75500 = `14500
EXERCISE 5.1
A. Calculate the profit or loss.
1. C.P. = `100, S.P. = `130
2. C.P. = `150, S.P. = `230
3. C.P. = `1200, S.P. = `900
4. C.P. = `1500, S.P. = `1200
5. S.P. = `600.50, C.P. = `550, overhead expense = `12.50
6. C.P. = `78000, S.P. = `85000, maintenance = `4500
B. Solve the following problems.
1. Tanya bought a watch for `5000 and sold it for `4500. Find her profit
or loss.
2. Rohit bought a mobile phone for `25000 and sold it for `16900. Find
