Operation of Time
Example 4: Anita completes her homework in 1 hour 15 minutes.
Then, she plays 1 hour 30 minutes. How much time did
she spend on these activities?
Solution: h min
Time spent in homework = 1 1 5
Time spent in play = + 1 3 0
Total time = 2 4 5
Thus, she spent 2 hours 45 minutes in all.
Note: Convert the time into the bigger units if the sum is
greater than 60.
Example 5: Mona and Ritu solved a sum in 10 minutes 40 seconds and
13 minutes 15 seconds respectively. Who solved first
and by how much?
Solution: First, compare the bigger units, i.e., 10 minutes < 13
minutes that means Mona solved the sum earlier.
min s
1 2 7 5
1 3 1 5
– 1 0 4 0
Difference between time = 2 3 5
Thus, Mona solved earlier than Ritu by 2 minutes 35
seconds.
Note: Borrow from the bigger unit and regroup in the
smaller unit if required.
