Conversion of Bigger Unit into Smaller Unit

1 h = 60 min 1 min = 60 s

Z Z To convert hours into minutes, multiply it by 60.

Z Z To convert minutes into seconds, multiply it by 60.

Example 1: Convert the following into minutes.

(a) 2 h (b) 3 h 10 min

Solution: (a) 2 h = 2 × 60 min = 120 min

(b) 3 h 10 min = 3 × 60 min + 10 min = (180 + 10) min

= 190 min

Example 2: Convert the following into seconds.
(a) 7 min (b) 14 min 55 s

Solution: (a) 7 min = 7 × 60 s = 420 s

(b) 14 min 55 s = 14 × 60 s + 55 s = 840 s + 55 s = 895 s

Conversion of Smaller Unit into Bigger Unit

To convert minutes into hours and seconds into minutes, divide by 60 in each

case.

Example 3: Convert: (a) 1320 s into min (b) 500 min into h and min

(c) 5000 s into h, min and s

Solution: (a) 1320 s = (1320 ÷ 60) min = 22 min
