Reading Time
We learnt measurement of time in the previous classes. First, we will recall
what we learnt earlier and then extend it.
A clock face is shown in the figure. The dial of
the clock is divided into 12 parts numbered from Minute hand
1 to 12. Further, each division is divided into
5 sub-divisions, so total 12 × 5 = 60 sub- Hour hand
divisions are on the face of the clock.
Second hand
A clock face has three hands. We know the
hour hand is the shortest and slowest moving hand that completes one
round in 12 hours. The minute hand is the thick and longer hand that
moves faster than the hour hand. It completes 1 round in one hour. The
thinnest and the fastest hand is known as second hand. It completes 1
round of the dial in 1 minute.
Thus, 1 hour = 60 minutes and 1 minute = 60 seconds
We also learnt to read the time into multiples of 5 minutes correctly. For
example, 5:15 is read as quarter past five, 4:25 as twenty-five minutes
past four, 7:30 as half past seven, 8:55 as five minutes to nine or eight
fifty-five, etc.
Now, we will learn to read the time in exact minutes.
Reading Time to The Nearest Minute
Observe the given clock face. The hour hand is between 2 and 3. It
means the time is between 2 o’clock and 3 o’clock. The minute hand
