Addition and Subtraction of Unlike Fractions

To add or subtract unlike fractions, convert them into like fractions and

               then solve as learnt earlier.

                                           2 4
               Example 13: Add and .
                                           3 5
                                                     2 4
Solution: To convert and into like fractions, find the LCM of
                                                     3 5

their denominators. As 3 and 5 are co-primes, so the LCM
                                   of 3 and 5 = 3 × 5 = 15

                                                             2 2× 5 10 4 4× 3 12
                                   Therefore, = = and = =
                                                             3 3× 5 15 5 5× 3 15

                                                       2 4 10 12 10 +12 22 7
                                   Now, + = + = = =1
                                                       3 5 15 15 15 15 15

(Result should be in the mixed fraction.)
