4 India—The Western Desert
C-1.1, C-4.2, C-5.3
Warm Up
Name this famous ruler of Rajasthan.
The word ‘desert’ reminds us about vast areas under loose sand and very
hot and dry climate. In India, deserts are found towards the west of the
Aravalli range. This region is called the Great Indian Desert or the Thar
Desert. It is located towards the west of the Northern Plains of India.
A large part of the Great Indian Desert
is in Rajasthan and the remaining part
of it is in Gujarat. The Western Desert
is surrounded by the Satluj river in the
north-west, the Aravalli range in the
east, the Indus Valley in the west and
the Rann of Kachchh in the south.
The eastern part of the desert is rocky,
while the western part is covered with
loose sand. There are low hills of sand
called the sand dunes. The strong winds The Thar Desert
which blow in Rajasthan can move the
sand dunes several hundred metres away.
