The Northern Plains are the largest
stretch of flat and levelled land in
India. The Northern Plains are
located towards the south of the
Northern Mountains and in the
north of the Southern Plateaus.
They extend from Punjab in the
west to Assam in the east, to a
distance of about 2,500 km. The
width varies between 150 km to
300 km. States in the Northern Plain Region
The Northern Plains have been formed by the deposition of gravel, sand,
clay and silt, brought by the rivers coming from the mountains. The
fine silt is very fertile and is called alluvium. The main rivers flowing
through the Northern Plains are Satluj, Ganga and Brahmaputra and
their tributaries. These rivers carry water almost throughout the year.
The area watered by a river and its tributaries is called its river basin.
