SUBTRACTION STORIES (Word Problems)

Many situations around us require subtracting numbers.

We may have to subtract the amount mentioned in a bill from the value

of notes we have given to find the money we will get back.
This helps us to check if the balance given back is correct or not.

Subtraction may or may not involve regrouping (carry over).

Now we will examine a few such situations in the following examples.

Example 13: A company sold 348472 cycles this year. Last year they
had sold 321270 cycles. How many more cycles did they

sell this year?

Solution: Number of cycles sold this year 3 4 8 4 7 2

Number of cycles sold last year – 3 2 1 2 7 0

27202 more cycles were sold this year. 2 7 2 0 2

Example 14: There are 63681 students in an open-university. 32774

of them are girls. How many students of the university
are boys?

Solution: Number of students 6 3 6 8 1

Number of girls – 3 2 7 7 4

Number of boys 3 0 9 0 7

Thus, there are 30907 boys in the university.
