The number from which we subtract is called minuend.

The result of subtraction is called difference.

Now let us learn how to subtract a smaller 5-digit number from a bigger

        5-digit number without borrowing.

        Steps in Subtraction

Z Z We arrange the digits in columns of ten thousands, thousands, hundreds,

            tens and ones.

Z Z The bigger number must always be on the top. The smaller number is

            written below it.

Z Z We write zero for vacant places.

Z Z Now we subtract numbers in each column separately.

        Example 10: Subtract 17705 from 68132.

        Solution: TTh Th H T O

                                      7 11 2 12

                                  6 8 1 3 2
                             – 1 7 7 0 5

                                  5 0 4 2 7

                            The difference is 50427.

        Example 11: Subtract 177542 from 587657

        Solution: L TTh Th H T O

                                 5 8 7 6 5 7
                             – 1 7 7 5 4 2

                                 4 1 0 1 1 5
                            The difference = 410115.

                                 Checking Subtraction By Addition

To check, if we have subtracted correctly or not we can use addition. If
the subtrahend and difference add up to the minuend, our subtraction is
        correct otherwise not.

                                                                                                              133
