P. 114
Rule 2: If the digit in the tens place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more than
or equal to 5) then we make the tens place and units place both
as zeros and add 100 to the number.
Example 30: Round 27723 to the nearest hundred.
Solution: Digit in tens place of 27723 is 2.
Clearly rule 1 is applicable.
To round the number we replace the units and tens place
both by zeros.
Hence 27723 rounded to the nearest hundred is 27700.
Rounding to the Nearest Thousands
Rule 1: If the digit in the hundreds place is 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (less
than 5) then we make the hundreds, tens and units place all as
zeros.
Rule 2: If the digit in the hundreds place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more
than or equal to 5) then we make the hundreds, tens and units
place as zeros and add 1000.
Example 31: Round 567985 to the nearest thousands.
Solution: Digit in hundreds place of 567985 is 9. Clearly rule 2 is
applicable. To round the number we replace the digit in
hundreds, tens and units places by zeros and add 1000.
Hence 567000 + 1000 = 568000.
Rounding to the Nearest Ten-thousands
Rule 1: If the digit in the thousands place is 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (less
than 5) then we make the thousands, hundreds, tens and units
place all as zeros.
Rule 2: If the digit in the thousands place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more
than or equal to 5) then we make the thousands, hundreds, tens
and units place as zeros and add 10000.
