Largest And Smallest Numbers Using Given Digits

        If digits are not repeated:

Z Z To write the largest number we write the digits in descending order

Z Z To write the smallest number we write the digits in ascending order if

we don’t have 0 as one of the digits

Example 25: Make the largest and the smallest number using each

                            of the digits 3, 5, 2, 9, 6 exactly once.

        Solution: We have the digits 3, 5, 2, 9 and 6.

First we will write the largest number.

Let us arrange them in descending order: 9, 6, 5, 3 and 2

                            The required number is 96532.

Now let us write the smallest number.

Let us arrange the digits in increasing order: 2, 3, 5, 6

                            and 9

                            The required number is 23569.

Z Z If 0 is one of the digits then we exchange it with the next higher digit.

Example 26: Make the smallest six digit number using each of the

                            digits 3, 0, 1, 7, 6, 9 exactly once.

Solution: Let us arrange the digits in increasing order 0, 1, 3, 6, 7

                            and 9.

But we cannot put 0 in the lakh place as this will make

our number a five digit number.

So we interchange 0 and 1

                                                    0 1, 3, 6, 7 and 9.

                            We get 1, 0, 3, 6, 7 and 9

                            The required number is 103679.

                                                                                                              109
