Comparison of Numbers with Different Number of Digits
Z Z If two numbers have different number of digits then the number with
more digits is always greater.
Z 46218 is a five digit number.
372148 is a six digit number.
Then, 372148 > 46218
Z Z We can also say that the number with lesser digits is always smaller.
Z Hence, 46218 < 372148
Comparison of Numbers with Same Number of Digits
We start from the left and go on comparing the digits until we find two
digits that are different.
Example 21: Compare 91,626 and 52,856.
Solution: First we consider the digits in ten-thousand’s place.
As 9 ten-thousands > 5 ten-thousands
\ 91,626 > 52,856 TTh Th H T O
Also, 52,856 < 91,626 9 1 6 2 6
5 2 8 5 6
Example 22: Compare 735320 and 732240.
Solution: Both the numbers have the same digits in lakhs and ten-
thousand’s place.
So we compare their thousands digits. L TTh Th H T O
As 5 thousands > 2 thousands
7 3 5 3 2 0
\ 735320 > 732240 7 3 2 2 4 0
Also, 732240 < 735320
