Take three pots. Put some sand in the first pot, some clay

in the second pot and some loam in the third pot. Sow a few
bean seeds in each of the pots. Water them every day. After
ten days, observe the growth of seeds in each of the pots and sand
find out the reason behind this.

                                                                                                clay loam

               Colours of Soil

e soil samples taken from di erent places

have di erent colours. Even their look and

feel are di erent from one another. e colour

and nature of soil depend not only on the
place, but also the depth under the ground,
from where it is taken. Water also a ects the

colour of soil. Wet soil is usually darker than
dry soil. You can know about the weather of a

place by squeezing some soil of that place in
your hands. If soil crumbles between your ngers, then the weather has probably

been dry. If soil is wet and sticky, then it might have rained in the recent past.

Wet and sticky soil is called mud.
                                           1 • Understanding

                 Write Yes or No.

                 1. Soil is produced in big factories.

                 2. Soil has particles of di erent sizes.
                 3. Sandy soil has air in it.

                 4. Clayey soil is also called ‘heavy soil’.

               Layers of Soil
Soil has many layers. ese layers are named as topsoil, subsoil, weathered

parent material and bedrock. ese layers of soil are seen when soil is dug

               straight down into the earth.
