Punctuation • Contractions

Sometimes, we use the short form of a group of words in place of the full form in spoken
English. We use an apostrophe (’) to indicate the missing letters. The short forms of the
words are known as contractions.

Examples: 1. I am in school now. → I’m in school now.

2. We are playing together. → We’re playing together.

3. Ruhi could not come today. → Ruhi couldn’t come today.

4. Sara did not come yesterday. → Sara didn’t come yesterday.

A. Rewrite the sentences using contractions wherever needed.

1. The neighbour’s dog is not like other dogs.

2. It is purple in colour.

3. I am afraid of it.

4. Let us stay away from the dog.

5. I do not like it at all.

6. I could not go near it.
