Subtraction of 4 Digit Numbers (Without borrowing)

Now let us learn how to subtract a smaller 4-digit number without borrowing.

We arrange the digits in columns of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones.

We write zero for vacant places.

Now we subtract numbers in each column separately.

Example 1: Subtract 3735 from 6969.

Solution:

Subtract ones. → 9 – 5 = 4 ones.

Subtract tens. → 6 – 3 = 3 tens.

Subtract hundreds. → 9 – 7 = 2 hundreds.

Subtract thousands. → 6 – 3 = 3 thousands.

The difference = 3234.
