Let us write them in expanded form before we add.

= 5000 + 900 + [100 + 10] + [10 + 2]
4000 + 300 + 70 + 8

+ 1000 + 600 + 40 + 4 = 5000 + 900 + 100 + 10 + 10 + 2
= 5000 + [900 + 100] + [10 + 10] + 2
5000 + 900 + 110 + 12

= 5000 + 1000 + 20 + 2

= [5000 + 1000] + 20 + 2

= 6000 + 20 + 2 = 6022

Solution: Step 1: Let us add the ones digits 1

9 + 7 = 16 = 10 + 6 2 4 2 9

= 1 ten + 6 ones + 4 8 5 7
We write 6 in ones column and 6

carry over 1.

Step 2: We add tens digit and carried
