In these examples, we usually stop the pouring of liquids when we

see that the smaller vessels are filled completely or are to be filled

up to brim. The amounts of liquids that these vessels (here smaller)
can hold are called their capacities.

Here, the capacity of the spoon is less than the capacity of the cup.

The capacity of the jug will be the maximum among these vessels.

                                             Measurement of Capacity

We measure the capacity of a bigger vessel in terms of a smaller vessel.

Vinayak measured the capacity of his bucket

               using his mugs.

He filled his bucket completely using 15 mugs
               of water.

Thus, the capacity of his bucket is 15 mugs.

                                                           ACTIVITY

Do these activities at your home and fill in the blanks.

Capacity of kettle Capacity of bottle Capacity of jug
                    = cups = bowls = glasses

If Vinayak used a bigger or a smaller mug, then what would the
               capacity of his bucket be?

The number of mugs will be less or more.

The capacity of a bucket does not depend upon the size of mugs used.

Therefore, we need to use standard units of capacity.
Litre and millilitre are the standard units of capacity.
