Inclined plane
An inclined plane is a sloping surface which reduces the Inclined plane

 Place a book on the flat surface of the table and then put a crayon box

at one end of the book. Push the crayon box with the help of a scale to
the other end of the book.
 Now, make a ramp by placing a wooden block under one end of the book.
Again, place the crayon box at the top of your ramp (the book). Using a
scale, push the crayon box down the ramp.
What do you observe? In which case was less effort used to push the crayon box?

A ramp, generally seen in hospitals, hotels, movie halls, foot-over bridges and
airports is an example of an inclined plane. It is an easy path to drive the vehicles

up a building. Inclined planes are also used for loading and unloading heavy
goods from trucks. Heavy and large drums are rolled up or down the inclined

planes. On mountains, roads are made with a slope as it helps vehicles to climb
up easily.

Wheel and Axle

e direction of a car is changed by using the steering wheel. e

steering wheel consists of a wheel attached to a rod called axle.
e wheel and axle arrangement helps us turn or move something

across a surface more easily.

e cycle you ride too has a wheel and axle arrangement. An egg
beater and a door knob are also examples of wheel and axle.

Wedge An egg beater

A wedge has two inclined planes joined back to back forming a sharp edge. It

is a simple machine which has both a blunt end and a sharp end. A wedge is
used to split or cut an object.
