Phrases and Clauses
Read these groups of words.
1. In the building (Subject and verb are missing.)
2. Behind the cottage (Subject and verb are missing.)
3. Began the trip (Subject is missing.)
These groups of words are phrases. A phrase is a group of two or more words that only
conveys a partial meaning. Unlike a sentence, it does not have a subject and a verb of
its own. However, it conveys some sense.
A clause is also a group of words. It has a subject and a verb like a sentence. It conveys
a meaning. Sometimes, it conveys a complete meaning and forms a sentence on its own.
Example: Rakesh loved nature.
Two or more clauses also form parts of a sentence.
Examples: 1. Grandfather was old, but he took care of his garden.
2. Rakesh took the cherry seed and planted it in the garden.
Note that each sentence has two clauses, which have been shown clearly. Many clauses
begin with conjunctions (and, but, so, because, etc.).
B. For each group of words write ‘S’ for sentence, ‘Ph’ for phrase and ‘C’ for clause.
1. Under the tree
2. Near the house
3. All the cherries are sour.
4. The boy took a cherry and he ate it.
5. There was a cherry blossom on a branch, but it withered away.
