Simplest Form of a Fraction
A fraction is said to be in its simplest form when its numerator and
denominator have no common factors other than 1. In other words, if
the numerator and the denominator are co-primes, the fraction is in its
simplest form.
3 17
Examples: (HCF of 3 and 8 is 1), (HCF of 17 and 35 is 1), etc.
8 35
To reduce a fraction to its lowest term, divide the numerator as well as
the denominator by their HCF.
20 20 ÷ 5 4
Example: = (HCF of 20 and 25 is 5) =
25 25 ÷ 5 5
4 20
Thus, is the simplest form of .
