Example 24: Round 63217993 to the nearest thousands.
Solution: Digit in hundreds place of 63217993 is 9. Clearly rule 2
is applicable. To round the number we replace the digit in
hundreds, tens and units places by zeros and add 1000.
Hence 63217000 + 1000 = 63218000.
Rounding to the Nearest Ten-thousands
Rule 1: If the digit in the thousands place is 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (less
than 5) then we make the thousands, hundreds, tens and units
place all as zeros.
Rule 2: If the digit in the thousands place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more
than or equal to 5) then we make the thousands, hundreds, tens
and units place as zeros and add 10000.
Example 25: Round 290255157 to the nearest ten-thousands.
Solution: Digit in thousands place of 290255157 is 5. Clearly rule 2
is applicable. To round the number we replace the digit in
thousands, hundreds, tens and units places by zeros and
add 10000.
Hence 290250000 + 10000 = 290260000.
Rounding to Nearest Lakhs
Rule 1: If the digit in ten thousands place is 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (less
than 5) then we make the thousands, hundreds, tens and units
place all as zeros.
Rule 2: If the digit in the thousands place is 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 (more
than or equal to 5) then we make the thousands, hundreds, tens
and units place as zeros and add 100 000.
Example 26: Round 1755175 to the nearest lakhs.
Solution: Digit in ten-thousands place of 1755175 is 5. Clearly rule
2 is applicable. To round the number, we replace the digit
in ten thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens and units
places by zeros and add 100000.
Hence 1700000 + 100000 = 1800000.
