rates and net gain from migration. In India, the death rate is falling due

to better health facilities, but the birth rate has not gone down much.
Thus, the natural increase in population is high. This has resulted in the

rapid growth of population in India.

The rapid growth of population is creating many problems. Some of the

problems are shortage of food, water, housing, schools, hospitals and
employment. About half of the total population of India is very poor.

They do not have enough to eat. They have big families and their income
        is limited.

                                                                                                    • Critical thinking

            4. The population in India is growing at a rapid speed.

About 70 per cent of the total population of our country lives in villages.

Farming is their main occupation. Many of them do not have land for
farming. They work as labourers on the fields. Most of the people in
villages are poor and have large families. They are uneducated and live

in huts. Many of them go to cities in search of work. In cities, they have

        to live in slums.

There are more than 30 cities in our
country whose population is more than

10 lakh. The cities are overcrowded. If
we want to progress, we must check the

growth of population. A small family
is a happy family. The government of

our country is also making efforts to
check the rapid growth of population.

Our total population does not match
