3 India—Agriculture
Warm Up
Name this famous scientist. He is called the ‘Father of the Green
Revolution’ in India.
Agriculture includes the cultivation of crops, horticulture, rearing of
animals and fishing. Agriculture is the most important occupation in
India. About 65 per cent of the total population in India directly or
indirectly depends upon agriculture.
Our country has suitable climate for cultivating crops throughout the
year. Agriculture provides food for our increasing population and raw
materials for agro-based industries.
There are two distinct agricultural seasons in our country. The Kharif
season begins with pre-monsoon showers. The main kharif crops are
rice, maize, millets, pulses, groundnut, cotton and jute. The Rabi season
begins when the rainy season is over. The main rabi crops are wheat,
gram, mustard, barley and oilseeds.
