Example 1: Find the area of figures drawn on the squared paper.

                                     (a)

                                                                      (b)

                                                                                           (c)

                                                                      (d)

Solution: (a) Number of complete squares = 12

∴ Area of this figure = 12 sq. units

                             (b) Number of complete squares = 4

∴ Area of this figure = 4 sq. units
                             (c) Number of complete squares = 6

Number of half squares = 2, i.e., 1 complete square
                                   ∴ Area of the figure = 6 + 1 = 7 sq. units

                             (d) Number of complete squares = 6

Number of more than half squares = 2

Number of half squares = 2, i.e., 1 complete square

                                   ∴ Area of the figure = 6 + 2 + 1 = 9 sq. units

        Finding Areas Using Formulas

Consider the rectangle 1 (a) again. Length of the rectangle = 4 squares

        and breadth = 3 squares

            Area calculated in 1 (a) = 12 sq. units

                                               = 4 × 3 sq. units

                                               = Length × Breadth

                                                                                                              191
