Thus, she finds that the yellow piece covers 9 tiles while the pink one
covers only 8 tiles, so she chooses the yellow piece as the bigger one.

The surface covered by an object is called its area. The shaded regions

show the surface covered by a square, a rectangle, a triangle and a circle.

The area is expressed in terms of a square whose side is of unit length.

It is the product of two linear measurements, i.e., length and breadth.

So, it is expressed in square units of linear measures.

Finding Area by Using Squared Paper

We can find the area of a figure using a squared paper. We follow these
               steps:

Step 1: Place the figure enclosing as many as possible maximum complete
                             squares.

Step 2: Count the number of complete squares enclosed by the figure.

Step 3: Count the number of half squares. Count two half squares as
                             one complete square.

Step 4: Count more than half square as one complete square and ignore
                             less than half square.

Total squares obtained in steps 2-4 is the area of that figure.
