Conversion of Units

Length

The commonly used units are millimetre, centimetre, metre and kilometre.
To convert one unit into another, observe the given diagram.

Z Z To convert cm into mm, multiply it by 10.

Z Z To convert mm into cm, divide it by 10.

Z Z To convert m into cm, multiply it by 100.

Z Z To convert cm into m, divide it by 100.

Z Z To convert km into m, multiply it by 1000.

Z Z To convert m into km, divide it by 1000.

Let us see some examples.

Example 1: Convert:

(a) 6 cm into mm (b) 4 m into cm

(c) 3 km into m (d) 6 m 25 cm into cm

(e) 4 cm 3 mm into mm (f) 7 km 250 m into m

Solution: (a) 6 cm = 6 × 10 mm = 60 mm ( 1 cm = 10 mm)

(b) 4 m = 4 × 100 cm = 400 cm ( 1 m = 100 cm)

(c) 3 km = 3 × 1000 m = 3000 m ( 1 km = 1000 m)

(d) 6 m 25 cm = 6 × 100 cm + 25 cm = (600 + 25) cm

= 625 cm

(e) 4 cm 3 mm = 4 × 10 mm + 3 mm = 40 mm + 3 mm = 43 mm
