P. 187
Let us find the first five multiples of 3 and 4.
3 × 1 = 3 3 × 2 = 6 3 × 3 = 9 3 × 4 = 12 3 × 5 = 15
4 × 1 = 4 4 × 2 = 8 4 × 3 = 12 4 × 4 = 16 4 × 5 = 20
Thus, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 are five multiples of 3 whereas 4, 8, 12, 16 and
20 are five multiples of 4.
There are infinite counting numbers. So, a number has endless multiples.
Properties of Multiples
Z Z Every number is a multiple of 1.
Z Z The first or the smallest multiple of a number is the number itself.
Z Z There are infinite multiples of every number. So, the largest multiple
of any number cannot be found.
Z Z The multiple of a number is either greater than or equal to the number.
Example 4: Find all the multiples of the following numbers less
than 50.
(a) 7 (b) 11 (c) 13
Solution: (a) 7 × 1 = 7, 7 × 2 = 14, 7 × 3 = 21, 7 × 4 = 28,
7 × 5 = 35, 7 × 6 = 42, 7 × 7 = 49, 7 × 8 = 56,
but 56 > 50
\ 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 are the multiples of 7 less
than 50.
(b) 11 × 1 = 11, 11 × 2 = 22, 11 × 3 = 33, 11 × 4 = 44,
11 × 5 = 55
but 55 > 50
\ 11, 22, 33, 44 are the multiples of 11 less than 50.
(c) 13 × 1 = 13, 13 × 2 = 26, 13 × 3 = 39, 13 × 4 = 52,
but 52 > 50
\ 13, 26, 39 are the multiples of 13 less than 50.
