Estimating Quotient
Example 8: Estimate 243 ÷ 23 by rounding to the nearest tens.
Solution: 243 ÷ 23
= 240 ÷ 20 (Rounding to the nearest tens)
= 24 ÷ 2 (Cancelling one zero each from dividend and divisor)
= 12 [Recall that 12 × 2 = 24]
Example 9: Estimate 4481 ÷ 298 by rounding to the nearest
hundreds.
Solution: 4481 ÷ 298
= 4500 ÷ 300 (Rounding to the nearest hundreds)
= 45 ÷ 3 (Cancelling two zeros each from dividend and divisor)
= 15 [Recall that 15 × 3 = 45]
Example 10: Estimate 7533 ÷ 28 by suitable rounding.
Solution: 7533 ÷ 28
= 7500 ÷ 30 (Rounding 7533 to the nearest hundreds and
28 to the nearest tens)
= 750 ÷ 3 (Cancelling one zero each from dividend and divisor)
= 250 [Recall that 250 × 3 = 750]
