Example 6: 16 apples can be packed in a tray. How many trays are
needed to pack 19744 apples?
Solution: For 16 apples we need 1 tray.
For 19744 apples we need (19744 ÷ 16) trays.
1 2 3 4
16 1 9 7 4 4
– 1 6

– 6 4
0 Thus we need 1234 trays.
Example 7: 374776 items are to be packed in trays. 16 items can be
packed in a tray. How many complete trays be packed?
How many items are left behind?
Solution: For 16 items we need 1 tray.
Number of complete trays = Quotient of 374776 ÷ 16.
The remainder will be the number of items left behind.

8 Quotient = 23423, Remainder = 8
Thus 23423 complete trays can be packed and 8 items will
be left behind.
