P. 169
Example 1: 374592 ÷ 16
Solution:
2 3 4 1 2
16 3 7 4 5 9 2
– 3 2
5 4
– 4 8
6 5
– 6 4
1 9
– 1 6
3 2
– 3 2
0 Quotient = 23412.
Long Division (With Remainder)
A dividend may not be exactly divisible by the divisor. In such a case we
are left with a number which is smaller than the divisor. This number is
called remainder.
Example 2: Divide 517463 by 16 and find the quotient and
remainder.
Solution:
3 2 3 4 1
16 5 1 7 4 6 3
– 4 8
3 7
– 3 2
5 4
– 4 8
6 6
– 6 4
2 3
– 1 6
7 Quotient = 32341 & Remainder = 7
Let us check if our division is correct.
