Long Multiplication Using Multiplication Facts 16–20
Example 1: Multiply 21423 by 16.
Solution:
L TThTh H T O
2 6 3 4
2 1 4 2 3
× 1 6
3 4 2 7 6 8
Step 1: 3 × 16 = 48. We write 8 at ones place in ones
column and carry over 4.
Step 2: 2 × 16 + 4 (carried over) = 36. We write 6 at
tens column and carry over 3.
Step 3: 4 × 16 + 3 (carried over) = 67. We write 7 in
hundreds column and carry over 6.
Step 4: 1 × 16 + 6 (carried over) = 22. We write 2 in
thousands column and carry over 2.
Step 5: 2 × 16 + 2 (carried over) = 34. We write 4 in ten
thousands column and 3 n lakhs column.
Hence, 21423 × 16 = 342768.
