Articles (a, an, the)
Read the following carefully.
1. Sunita kept an umbrella and a napkin in a packet.
2. She kept the packet on the front seat of her car and drove off.
In the above sentences, the highlighted words a, an and the are called articles. We use
them before nouns. A and an are used before singular countable nouns. The is used both
before singular and plural nouns.
A, An
We use an before a singular countable noun that begins with a vowel sound.
Examples: an orange, an owl, an egg, an ink pen, an e-mail
Some words do not begin with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), but we use an
before them because they begin with a vowel sound.
Examples: an honourable man, an honest boy, an MLA, an MP, etc.
The letter ‘h’ is silent in the words ‘honourable’ and ‘honest.’
In the words ‘MLA’ and ‘MP’, the first letter, M, begins with a vowel
sound, ‘em.’ So, we use ‘an’ with MLA and MP.
We use a before a singular countable noun that begins with a consonant sound.
Examples: a house, a computer, a mobile phone
A. Fill in the blanks with a or an.
1. Humpty Dumpty was sitting on wall that was narrow.
