time. Exactly how tall you are, can be found by measuring your height or length.

Exactly how hot or cold a day is, can be found by measuring its temperature.

Everything is measured in a unit. A unit is the smallest quantity of anything
        that can be measured.

Mass, weight, length, time and temperature are measured using di erent
measuring units. We also use different instruments to measure these
        quantities.

                                          MEASURING LENGTH

Length is the measure of how long or short a thing is. You
might have used a scale or a ruler to draw lines. is scale

is used to measure smaller lengths.

You must have seen a tailor using an inch tape or measuring
tape to measure the cloth. A clothseller uses a metre scale

or rod to measure the length of the cloth.

A ruler, an inch tape and a metre scale are standard objects A measuring tape
that are used to measure the length.

           Activity

Each one of you should bring a small plastic ruler as
shown in the picture. Ask your teacher to show the
markings of the centimetres and millimetres. Learn
how to use the ruler to measure length.

        Units of Length

e standard unit for measuring length is metre. e smaller lengths are measured

in centimetre and millimetre. Your height is also measured in centimetre. e
larger lengths (distances) are measured in kilometre.
