e eight planets, starting from the sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,

Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Earlier, another heavenly body, named Pluto, was

                                       THE EARTH—OUR HOME

e Earth is the third planet of the solar

system. It is the only planet of the solar system, Knowledge Zone

which has life on it. It is somewhat round and The Earth weighs eighty-one

slightly attened at the top and the bottom. times more than the moon.
e attened ends of the Earth are called its

poles. Almost three-fourths of the surface of
the Earth is covered with water. Also, it has a thick layer of air surrounding it,
called atmosphere. e atmosphere extends up to 800 kilometres from the Earth’s

surface. It contains many gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water
        vapour, dust, etc.
