and chew it properly. Saliva gets mixed with food in the mouth. From the mouth,
the food reaches the stomach through the foodpipe.
In the stomach, many digestive juices get mixed with the food. ey change food
into a simpler form. Now, food in the simpler form enters the small intestine
where it is digested completely. e useful substances from the digested food
are taken into blood which are distributed to all the body parts through blood.
e undigested food goes into the large intestine and leaves the body through
the anus.
Respiratory System
e main organs of the respiratory system are nose, Nose
windpipe and lungs. We need oxygen to stay alive. e
main function of this system is to take in (inhale) oxygen Windpipe

through the nose from the surrounding air and give out
(exhale) carbon dioxide.
e small hair inside the nose traps the dust particles Lungs
from the air that enters in. From the nose, air goes into
the windpipe. From the windpipe, it goes into the lungs. Respiratory system
Inside the lungs, the blood takes oxygen from the inhaled air and leaves carbon
dioxide in the lungs. We breathe out carbon dioxide through our nose.
Knowledge Zone S E L Self-Management • Hands-on Learning
Put your right hand on the left side of your chest for a few seconds. What do you feel?
Now, jog on the spot for three minutes. Feel your chest again. Do you feel it goes up
and down? Put your hand below your nostrils. Do you feel air coming out?
1 • Critical Thinking
Match the following.
1. Digestive system (a) helps in the movement of the body.
2. Muscular system (b) takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide.
3. Respiratory system (c) changes the food into a simpler form.
Circulatory System
e heart, blood and blood vessels make the circulatory system.
