F. Rampur and Shyampur are two nearby small towns. Rampur has a population
of 9263 and Shyampur has a population of 5895. Estimate how many more
people live more in Rampur than in Shyampur by rounding to nearest

thousands.

MATHS LAB ACTIVITY • Experiential Learning

Aim: To practise mix operations of addition and subtraction

Materials: Number cards, paper and pencil

Note: Play with a partner

Preparation of number cards: Take covers of ten matchboxes and make twenty
cards. Write a 3-digit number on each card. For example, a set of 20 cards are:

Method:

1. Take a set of cards. Turn them downwards and shuffle them.

2. Then deal out the deck evenly between each player.

3. Each player turns over two cards and adds

the number written on them using paper
and pencil. The player who gets bigger sum 300 555 666 400

will obtain 1 point and subtract his/her
Total = 855 Total = 1066
score from the biggest 4-digit number.

Suppose the players open the cards. So, player B will obtain 1 point
and he subtracts 9999 – 1066 = 8933.

4. Again, each player turns a pair of cards. Repeat the process as discussed in
step 3. The player whose difference reaches or crosses the smallest

4-digit number first will be the winner.
5. Distribute the cards and play until the winner is declared.
