Example 6: On a particular day, Shridhi saw the number of red
kites and yellow kites in the ratio 2 : 5. If the number
of yellow kites was 15, find the number of red kites in

                            the sky.
        Solution: We have Red kites : yellow kites = 2 : 5

Also, the number of yellow kites = 15

                            So, Red kites : 15 = 2 : 5

                            i.e., Red kites × 5 = 15 × 2
                                                                   15 × 2
                            \ Red kites = = 6
                                                                      5

Thus, the number of red kites was 6.

Example 7: Aman and Anil together bought 66 oranges. They

distributed them in the ratio 5 : 6. Find the number of
                            oranges each one got.

        Solution: The given ratio is 5 : 6. Sum of the terms = 5 + 6 = 11
                                                                                       5
Therefore, Aman got 5 out of 11, i.e., and Anil got 6
                                                    6 11
                            out of 11, i.e., .
                                                   11

                                      5 5 6
                            Thus, of 66 oranges = × 66 = 30 oranges
                                      11 11

                                      6 6 6
                            and of 66 oranges = × 66 = 36 oranges
                                     11 11
