                                                      Roman Numerals

So far we learnt the numerals known as Hindu-Arabic Numerals. The ancient

Romans developed a different system of numeration. They used only seven
symbols to represent different numbers. They did not use place-value

system as we learnt in the Hindu-Arabic System. They had different rules
for writing the numbers using seven symbols. They had no symbols for 0.

The following table shows the seven symbols and their corresponding value
               in the Hindu-Arabic Numerals.

                Roman Numerals I V X L C D M

                Hindu-Arabic Numerals 1 5 10 50 100 500 1000

Writing the Numbers Using Roman Numerals

                 1. The numerals I, X, C and M are special as they can be repeated

maximum up to three times to write other numbers. The values of

                     repeated numerals are added.

                     Example: II = 1 + 1 = 2, XXX = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30, CC = 100 + 100

                     = 200, etc.
