Checking for Equivalence
To check whether the two fractions are equivalent or not, multiply the
numerator of the first fraction with the denominator of the second fraction
and the denominator of the first fraction with the numerator of the second
fraction. If the two products are equal, then the fractions are equivalent,
otherwise not.
Let us explain it with examples.
Example 2: Check whether the given fractions are equivalent or
not.
5 20 3 9
(a) and (b) and
6 24 4 16
5 20
Solution: (a)
6 24
5 × 24 = 120 = 6 × 20 = 120 (By cross-multiplication)
5 20
Here, the two products are equal. So, =
6 24
3 9
(b)
4 16
3 × 16 = 48 ≠ 4 × 9 = 36 (By cross-multiplication)
3 9
Here, the two products are not the same. So, ≠
4 16
