6 Our Rights and Duties
Warm Up
1. Every State is known by the Rights it maintains. —Harold J Laski
2. If you have Right to walk along the street, it is your Duty to give
a reasonable space to others.
Discuss the above two quotations in the class.
India has been an independent and sovereign country since 15 August
1947, the day we got independence from the British rule. From that day
onwards, we are being ruled by an elected government that follows a
constitution. A constitution is a legal document, which has a set of rules
and regulations. The government runs the country according to these
rules and regulations.
The leaders of our country appointed a committee to prepare the Constitution
of India. The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 January 1950. Thus,
26 January is celebrated as the Republic Day in India every year. The
Constitution of India is the longest written constitution in the world.
The Constitution of India says that India is a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular,
Democratic Republic. Let us learn the meaning of these words.
1. Sovereign means we are free to run our country in any way we like.
2. Socialist means all of us will be treated as equals.
3. Secular means everyone is free to practise his/her own religion.
4. Democratic means the government is elected by the people of the country.
5. Republic means the country is run by the people and not by any king.
