technology have developed a variety of fast moving means of transport,

such as scooters, motorcycles, cars, buses, trucks, trains, aeroplanes and
ships. They have made the movement fast and comfortable. Today, the

main modes of transport are roads, railways, airways and waterways.
India has a good network of the modern modes of transport.

Roads

Roads are an important mode of
transport for short distances. We use

bicycles, scooters, autorickshaws,

cars, buses, trucks, vans, etc., to
move on roads. The roads can be
metalled or un-metalled. India

has a very large network of roads.

The roads connecting main cities

and ports are called National
Highways. These roads are

constructed and looked after by
the National Highway Authority

of India (NHAI).

The State governments have also

built state highways, district roads
and village roads. These roads Important roads

are looked after by the State government. Town and village roads are
maintained by Gram Panchayats and

Municipal Committees.

There are more roads in the plain areas

than in the mountains. Now the NHAI
is planning and building Expressways

in different parts of the country.

Good roads can help in the movement of

people and goods at the time of natural
