                                                                                                 C-1.2, C-4.1

                                      Knowing Decimal fractions

        We know that 4444 = 4000 + 400 + 40 + 4 or 4 × 1000 + 4 × 100 + 4 × 10

+ 4 × 1. Here, we can see, when we move from right to left, the place value
of 4 is multiplied by 10 or we move from left to right, it is divided by 10. This

system of writing numbers is called the decimal system (‘deci’ means 10).

Do you know what happens when a digit moves right from the ones place?

The place value of a digit becomes one-tenth as the digit moves from left
        to right by one place.

The fractions like , , , , , etc., are called decimal fractions.

Let us know it clearly by understanding about the following places in the

        decimal system.

        Tenths
                                                                             1
Observe the given strip with different shades. of the strip is yellow,
                                                                            10
         2 4
is red and is green. We can write these shades as .1 of the strip
         10 10

is yellow, .2 is red and .4 is green.

                                      1 2 4
                                     10 10 10

Expressions like .1, .2 and .4 are called decimal expressions. .1 is read
as one-tenth or point one or decimal one. Point (.) is called decimal.

Thus, we read 2 as two-tenths or point two or decimal two and .4 as
four-tenths or point four or decimal four.
