                                  Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

        Read the given sentence.

        Joginder blows a whistle.
                        (verb) (object)
In the above sentence, the verb ‘blows’ has an object, whistle. An object answers the question
who, whom or what. Transitive verbs are those verbs that take objects.

Examples: 1. He throws a ball. 2. They fly kites.
                                          (verb) (object) (verb) (object)
A transitive verb may have two objects.

Example: Grandma tells Nidhi a story every night.
                                          (verb) (object) (object)
        Now, read these sentences.

            1. The girl dances well.
            2. The baby cries.

            3. Dogs bark.

The highlighted verbs are intransitive verbs.
Intransitive verbs do not take objects to complete the meaning. Sometimes, we can use

the same verb as transitive or intransitive.

Examples: 1. Ruhi paints well. (Intransitive verb)
                                          (verb)
                      2. Ruhi paints pictures. (Transitive verb)
                                          (verb) (object)

                                                                                                               73
