After many years, they managed to tie a sharp stone to a stick. They

used it as a spear. Now it was easy for them to kill the animals from a
distance. The spear also protected them from big animals. Now the early

humans were hunters. They invented different types of stone tools like
               axe and hammer.

                                                            Cave Life

The early humans wanted to protect themselves from extreme hot and
cold weather. They discovered caves and took shelter in them. The caves

protected them from wild animals. The caves were the first homes of

               human beings.

                                                      Invention of Fire
Fires were common in the jungles, especially during the dry summer

season. The early humans were afraid of fire. The early humans had no
knowledge of lighting fire. They tried to keep the jungle fire burning

by adding dry twigs and leaves. They noticed that rubbing hard stones
together can produce a spark of fire. It was a great discovery. The early

humans took hundreds of years to learn about the uses of fire. They used
fire for lighting up and also for heating the caves. The fire also kept the

               wild animals away.

                                                    Process of Cooking
Perhaps one day, the early man was cutting

the flesh of an animal. By chance, a piece

of raw flesh fell into fire. It got roasted.
The early man took out the semiroasted
piece of flesh. He found that the roasted

piece of raw flesh was softer and tastier.

This is how the cooking of food might
have started. The discovery of fire brought
many changes in the life of early humans.
